 Advocacy and Cultural Competence

Modern health care in the USA aims at reducing health disparities towards better patient care. Cultural competence is a pillar towards this success by promoting cultural sensitivity and unbiased care delivery. It entails providing health care that respects diversity and cultural differences like language, communication styles, attitudes, beliefs, and behavior (American Nurses Association, 2015). The National NCLAS is part of attaining these efforts by establishing a blueprint for cultural competence for health care organizations. It has a significant influence on me and my peers in our nursing practice. 

Working in a community with people from different cultures presents a unique challenge due to the multiple cultural affiliations. They have different ways of thinking about health care with some traditions going against western medicine. Nonetheless, to avoid cultural insensitivity as nurses, we have made it our responsibility to avoid making assumptions about cultures that we do not understand. As a rule, nurses have to ask about such ethnic differences from patients and use a body language that suggests openness and an intent to understand/learn. In a situation where language is a barrier, there are trained translators from different ethnic groups to facilitate communication. The approach intends to promote cultural competence and sensitivity for quality health care delivery.
